The organisers’ vision for the Aberystwyth Comedy Festival is to provide a space for acts to perform polished shows following ‘work in progress’ slots at Machynlleth Comedy Festival in the spring, and a run at the Edinburgh Fringe over the summer.
What to expect
Venues for the Aberystwyth Comedy Festival range from small, intimate spaces for up to 50 people to large 900 seat venues. Several of the venues are concentrated within a 10 minute walk of each on or near Aberystwyth seafront. The festival is growing and expanding its reach through the town and up onto the Aberystwyth University campus.
On Friday and Saturday night there is a comedy showcase, held at the town's Commodore cinema venue. Each two hour show has a different line up of comedians.
Family friendly comedy
Many of the ticketed shows have an age limit so it is worth checking before buying tickets for anyone under 18.
There are dedicated family shows, including performances for young children.
Comedy in Welsh
Aberystwyth Comedy Festival would not be complete without several sell-out shows in Welsh with established comedians who can entertain in either English and Welsh such as the ever popular Tudur Owen
But have you ever wondered what stand-up comedy might be like in another language?
Here’s your chance to find out. In an anarchic and unpredictable show that has continuously sold out at both Machynlleth and Aberystwyth comedy festivals, comedians perform in Welsh and the audience will hear an English translation. Live! Only a couple of minor technical hitches, and due to being blacklisted by every translator in the land, the translations will instead be provided… by the comedians themselves.
Starring translator-turned-comedian Steffan Alun and a line-up of the Welsh language scene’s best acts.
Utterly hilarious, you’ll laugh from start to finish – and almost certainly learn a lot about Welsh language and culture along the way.
Tickets for shows
You only buy a ticket for the show(s) you want to see, allowing you to go and watch as much or as little as you want across the weekend. Certain shows will sell out so if there’s a show you really want to see then it is best to buy tickets in advance via the website.
If you’d rather take your pick on the weekend, there is a festival box office at the Bandstand on the Prom selling tickets to all remaining shows.
